Tsukuba Office, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research Council Secretariat

Tsukuba Office, the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research Council Secretariat of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Japan (MAFF) was established in 1978 and has been planning and operating various research facilities for supporting experimental research activities of research agencies, prefectural organizations and universities. The Tsukuba office is currently managing two centers, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research Information Technology Center (AFFRIT) and Tsukuba Bioscience hall (TBH). The AFFRIT has developed and operated various information technologies such as high performance network systems, database systems, and computer cluster systems including super computers. On the other hand, the TBH is supporting research collaboration, especially industry-academia-government research activity.

Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research Information Technology Center (AFFRIT)

In order to facilitate national research activities, the AFFRIT has developed and maintained research database systems for offering Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (AFF) research data obtained from internal or external sources. The center has also maintained a research network system, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research Network (MAFFIN) which is a high performance network facility for offering capabilities of large-volume data transmission and advanced application services. The following are current services using the MAFFIN.

  1. Scientific Computing System: Capability of fast calculation and treatment of large-volume scientific data
  2. Network Service System: Network service for research information exchange among researchers all over the world
  3. AGROPEDIA: Integrated database system for agriculture, forestry and fisheries research information
  4. Research Results Dissemination System: Web service for dissemination research results to the public

The MAFFIN is designed not only to exchange research data among 100 nationwide research institutions, but also to promote exchanging information with overseas resources linking up with Asia-Pacific Advanced Network (APAN) and Third Generation of the Trans-Eurasia Information Network (TEIN3). In addition, the AFFRIT has arranged and maintained a Philippine communication line to exchange research information with Philippine.

International cooperation

International cooperation with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has been carried out in data-entry operation in Japan for developing an international database, the International Information System for the Agricultural Sciences and Technology (AGRIS).

Tsukuba Bioscience Hall (TBH)

The TBH was established in 1989 in order to promote research collaboration especially among industrial, academic and governmental research institutions related to agriculture, forestry and fishery. In cooperation with research institutions of Independent Administrative Institutions (IAI), the TBH holds various types of seminars, symposiums, workshops and planning's with offering various facilities. The TBH is managed by the Research and Development Cooperation Division of the Tsukuba Office.
